Thinking about using handlebar wrap on a steering wheel.

I honestly can’t think of a downside. Seems much better than using a steering wheel cover in my mind.

Just make sure you evenly space the non color matching zip ties!

Isn’t that just basically Tennis  OverGrip Tape?

There would be the seem/s where you’d have a zip tie or electrical tape

That’s your straight ahead marker, if you do it right!

It works ( best) in one direction (along the ‘scales’), so it’ll start to deteriorate/loosen quickly.

How good are your leather skills. You would want to lace it and synthetic handlebar tape would tear. At which point you should just buy a drilled leather DIY steering wheel cover kit with everything you would need

It would be cheaper than a good steering wheel cover, and better than one of the cheap ones.

No substitute for a real leather cover though...

I think it’d be pretty hard wearing on the steering wheel I need to cover:

On a modern, soft wheel, it would unravel quickly.

Pretty different, has a different profile for more cushioning than tennis tape, is typically cork though Brooks and others have leather options , plus it comes in much longer lengths so you can wrap your bars with one package instead of like four or six as you’d need with tennis tape.

It’s not really about what’s underneath, but rather that you’re applying force against the grain.

It’ll work, but you'll have to replace it somewhat regularly. (Anyway, bar tape is cheap, so why not?)

The only potential downside is the length of the tape involved . Most premium bar tapes are only long enough to do one side each of a handle bar and this would barely be enough to do half a steering wheel. Any wheel with thick spokes would also be tricky to work with.

I have done it before using leather string...sort of thing you use to stitch leather. Many moons ago we also did a mate’s car (an ol d Beetle I think) with hemp string and shellac but waxed string could also work nicely in this situation...

They used to make a cotton bar tape with adhesive on the back. Not sure if its still in existence but it wouldn’t un ravel or try to curl as quickly. It was popular with velodrome racers.

Showing my age here... Back in the 70s, I’d run down to Kmart and buy a fake leather steering wheel wrap for when the plastic wheel started deteriorating.

I did it once with some butt-ugly Cinelli tape I had laying around , but the wheel wouldn’t slide through my hand “against the grain”. I took it off in less than a week and never looked back.

There’s a sort of foam rubber wrap that is self adhesive - but I think I’d probably go with some of the old-style vinyl wrap.
